We begin at Māngere Education Centre, where you’ll take a guided walking tour with local mana whenua (local people) around Māngere Mountain (Te Pane o Mataoho). This is an ancient, well-preserved dormant volcano with significant historical importance, featuring evidence of early Māori settlement, terraces, and food storage pits (kūmara pits). Guides share local stories and legends, providing a deep connection to the land.
Continue to Pukekiwiriki (Red Hill) — once a significant Māori pā site with fortified terraces, strategic vantage points and enduring ancestral histories. Enjoy the stunning views over the region as we share kōrero about local iwi, settlement, and the land features that guided early occupation.
